We have the highest educated workforce in the Netherlands, with more than 50% of the region’s working population holding an academic degree. Utrecht Region’s workforce is well-trained and multilingual, and its people are known for their efficiency and pragmatism. Its mix of peaceful yet lively cities, picturesque villages, castles, lakes and forests keeps drawing people in.

World-class universities

We’re home to many of the best academic institutions in the country. These include:

  • Utrecht University, rated the best Dutch research university since 2003 (Shanghai Ranking) with the country’s only faculty of veterinary medicine;  
  • HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, with locations in both Utrecht and Amersfoort;
  • HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, one of Europe’s largest university for arts, media and culture in Europe;
  • Nyenrode Business Universiteit, an internationally recognised business school;
  • SOMT University of Physiotherapy, the first physiotherapy university in the Netherlands.

With five highly regarded universities located in the region, there’s a steady supply of highly qualified and motivated graduates.

The Dutch are among the most multilingual people in the world, with some 90% of the population proficient in English and many speaking German and French as well. With more than 170 nationalities, Utrecht Region also offers a large pool of native speakers of a large variety of languages.

Access to multilingual talent

Nine of the Netherlands’ 13 leading universities are around an hour’s travel from Utrecht. The region’s central location and excellent connections ensure access to a virtually inexhaustible pool of talent. A high quality of life makes it easy to attract and retain qualified workers. The Netherlands’ progressive immigration laws simplify recruiting international talent. To provide further assistance, Utrecht Region has set up a portal to accommodate and support international workers and students wishing to relocate to the region.

Welcoming international talent and their families

Utrecht Region’s business ecosystem includes more than 1,000 foreign companies and 60,000 international employees, graduates and students. The International Welcome Centre Utrecht Region is a one-stop shop where newcomers can go for help with formalities and official matters such as work and residence permits and for practical information about living, working and studying in Utrecht Region. The International School Utrecht, an International Baccalaureate World School, will move into a new, state-of-the art building in 2020, which can accommodate 1,000 children. Utrecht Region also has several primary and secondary schools offering bi-lingual English and Dutch education.
